Will came to spring training practice last Sunday and gave us some tips to remember.
Front Crawl
Arms should feel wide apart when you reach in - because of the body roll your shoulder will roll the arm into streamline position. If you have your arms too close together, the body roll will actually cross your arm past your body's midline =inefficient.
Use the whole stroke - push through the last half of the stroke fully. No "s" pull - that is outdated.
Breast Stroke/Whip Kick
Focus should be on propulsion forward - so don't focus on the 'around' as much - that just pushes water together, rather than forward.
Keep knees close together (slightly narrower than hip width), but they don't need to touch.
Butterfly
Two kicks to an arm pull - once when your arms go in, and once to kick your arms out.
Breathing - you should be breathing from the time your hands are in front of your hips through the arm recovery. By the time your arms go into the water, you should be diving down into the water.
Arm stroke - Keyhole stroke where arms come in to your hips and then slightly out.
